Slight change from my usual format – and promise I have Bolivia posts coming 😉 – but just wanted to share this photo and legend from here in San Pedro de Atacama, Chile! 🌋🌋
Atacameña legend tells that the taller of these two volcanoes, Licancabur, cut off his brother Juriques’ head when he tried to seduce his wife, Mount Quimal. Mount Quimal was then sent away by the father of all volcanoes… and that is why we see a gap next to them and a freestanding mountain at the other side of the desert! How’s that for geology?
The lovely colours come from the fact that we had a viewpoint with the sunset just behind us. If you stood there for the whole time you could see the mountains and volcanoes change from red to blue to purple.
